Working it Out

As promised, I went running with my brother this morning. We walked one block, ran another, up and down the snowy tree lined streets of Whitefish Bay.

I whined a lot ("I feel like I have to throw up! I have a cramp! I can't run in the snow! My legs feel like jello! It hasn't been a block yet! I'm tired!") and my brother pushed me and kept me going. Without him, I would've stopped after the first block.
Day 115: January 26th, 2008
It's a start, and I'm proud of myself. I forgot how good I feel after a hard workout. It's one of the best feelings in the world, but oh, my legs definitely feel it. We didn't stretch immediately after the run, but after I left my kind-hearted drill sergeant brother's house, I felt a cramp and stopped at my favorite East Side Milwaukee landmark, Villa Terrace , overlooking the lake, to stretch it out. I like how working out in the morning helps me accomplish something important and good early on so that if I do nothing else worth mentioning, I still have that. Strangely, my bloodsugar before the run was 173 and afterwards spiked to 276. I treated the high, ate a small breakfast, and an hour later was at 306. It took until almost five hours later until it landed in range, and then plummeted after about 7 hours. I'm keeping an eye on things.

I gave my jello legs a rest this afternoon and went solo to a showing of Juno at my favorite movie theater of all time, The Oriental, on Milwaukee's fashionably hip East Side.

I liked the film, but after all the hype I couldn't help but feel slightly disappointed. All told, though, it beats most films I've seen as of late (though I liked Atonement and next on my list is No Country for Old Men). Enjoy the rest of your weekend. I'll see you on Monday!

You were disappointed by Juno? I guess because I saw it on opening day, I didn't have as many expectations. Even the second time around I still cried and laughed, plus I knew all the songs! I think I got a lot from it because I am the same age as the character, and I relate to her on a lot of levels.

Jilly Bean,
Don't get me wrong--I liked Juno quite a bit, but I found it trying a a little too hard to be witty.

Wow! That first picture of the snow was gorgeous! Freezing cold, I'm sure, but gorgeous.

hey amylia,
congrats on your run! and in the snow to boot.

about the blood sugar rise... i find that my blood sugar often rises or stays the same when i do a hard run. when i do light or moderate exercise, it drops like crazy (sometimes over 300 points in under an hour). So if you're not used to running (and were working hard enough to your stomach hurt), that makes sense that it woudl be hard exercise and could raise you. Also, fyi, sometimes i have a drop 6-10 hours later after one of those hard workouts, so you might want to keep an eye on things. And that kind of exercise, when i do it regularly, definitely leads to lower blood sugars overall in the next few days from the boost in my metabolism.

i am on the opposite trend though, unfortunately... i have barely been working out the last 2 weeks even though it's usually something i do almost every day. ugh. not helping the mental health or the blood sugars.

Yay to your brother for his ability to get you running! And yay to you, for running - and not whining, too much...

"The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay if they'd put fifteen more miles behind her....."
I assume you and Gordon are talking about the same Whitefish Bay? (I love that song).

You are such a superstar. Running really intimidates me.

I miss my D friends without my reliable computer! :(
